Since May 2025, the new Immigration Regulation (R.D. 1155/2024)has been in force, profoundly transforming the pathways to regularization in Spain.
New Forms of Arraigo
The new regulation has reorganized and expanded the modalities of arraigo, allowing access to temporary residence for social, family, educational, labor, and even second-chance reasons. Below, we explain in detail the five new pathways.
Who Cannot Apply for Arraigo?
None of the arraigo modalities can be requested by people who are currently asylum seekers.
This means that if you have applied for asylum and your case is still open, you cannot access arraigo unless your application is resolved or you expressly withdraw it.

1. Social Arraigo
For those who have family ties to legal residents or have demonstrated social integration. Requires 2 years of continuous residence in Spain.
You’ll need a social integration report or proof of financial means if you depend on a resident family member.
You can also submit a self-employment project if you don’t have a job offer.
2. Labor Arraigo
Designed for those with a formal job offer.
Requires 2 years in Spain and employment contracts totaling at least the minimum wage (SMI) and 20 hours per week.
Ideal for those already working informally who can formalize their situation with a valid contract.
3. Family Arraigo
For parents or legal guardians of minors who are citizens of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, or those providing support to a European person with disabilities.
No minimum prior residence required. Grants a 5-year residence permit with the right to work.
4. Educational (Socio-Formative) Arraigo
For those who wish to pursue vocational training or other recognized studies.
Requires 2 years of residence in Spain and enrollment (or admission) in an accredited course.
You’ll also need a social integration report issued by your local city hall.
5. Second-Chance Arraigo
This is the standout innovation of the new regulation — intended for those who previously had legal residence but lost it for failing to renew on time or not meeting certain requirements.
You must have held residence within the last 2 years and have lived in Spain for at least 2 years.
